Mid-tempo: Near and yet so far, and that's the hardest part. Five blocks away, but a whole wide world apart.

My first real appreciation for music hit me the first time I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. The emotion and enthusiasm of the audience on that small black and white screen was a real eye opener for me. I began writing songs a few years later as a teenager and decided to teach myself to play guitar. What better way to impress girls, right? As I matured as a writer it was my love for a good story song that morphed me into a country songwriter. I enjoy reading articles about other songwriters, and one of my biggest influences was a Johnny Cash quote that said he used the "KISS" method of writing. An acronym for "Keep It Simple Stupid", and I thought that sounded pretty easy. Was I ever WRONG! I have learned that creating a song that comes across as conversational and uncomplicated was not as easy as it sounded. After several years of writing, and many stacks of spiral bound notebooks, I slowly turned into a better writer as I learned to draw from life's experiences. My dad was a career military man, and I was born on an Army base in Augusta, Georgia. Growing up I spent summers on my grandparents farm in Louisiana, and so I am forever filled with a deep love for the south. My family and I live in the Flint Hills of Kansas. This site contains a portion of my catalog which is pitched daily in Nashville. Lyrics
I still see her 'round the neighborhood Runnin' errands one by one At the Burger King, the hardware store The stuff we'd always done She's moved out and left me On this lonesome boulevard She's just five blocks away But a whole wide world apart She says life ain't so different Just a whole where I used to be But says she's fillin' it bit by bit That's life c'est la vie When I ask her to please come home All she says is au revoir She's just five blocks away But a whole wide world apart CHORUS Guess I shouldn't be surprised Cause it's no mystery She told me if things didn't change We'd be history I see her 'round the neighborhood There goes what I was She's not findin' it so hard To fall this out of love When we speak her voice is warm But I know that look by heart She's just five blocks away But a whole wide world apart INSTRUMENTAL CHORUS (repeat) I'd give all I've got For one of those long gone yesterdays I should just forget her This time she's left to stay I guess I wasn't there for her Now it's too late to start Since she's five blocks away But a whole wide world apart TAG Near and yet so far I think that's the hardest part Five blocks away, but a whole wide world apart
