My first real appreciation for music hit me the first time I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. The emotion and enthusiasm of the audience on that small black and white screen was a real eye opener for me. I began writing songs a few years later as a teenager and decided to teach myself to play guitar. What better way to impress girls, right? As I matured as a writer it was my love for a good story song that morphed me into a country songwriter. I enjoy reading articles about other songwriters, and one of my biggest influences was a Johnny Cash quote that said he used the "KISS" method of writing. An acronym for "Keep It Simple Stupid", and I thought that sounded pretty easy. Was I ever WRONG! I have learned that creating a song that comes across as conversational and uncomplicated was not as easy as it sounded. After several years of writing, and many stacks of spiral bound notebooks, I slowly turned into a better writer as I learned to draw from life's experiences. My dad was a career military man, and I was born on an Army base in Augusta, Georgia. Growing up I spent summers on my grandparents farm in Louisiana, and so I am forever filled with a deep love for the south. My family and I live in the Flint Hills of Kansas. This site contains a portion of my catalog which is pitched daily in Nashville. Lyrics
I crossed a line that I had drawn after church last June The Sunday I saw Josephine sittin' in the right front pew Her cotton dress clung to her, I was swallowed by temptation And gave in knowing well that she would lead to my damnation For three months the two of us struggled with our vows Except for times we spent alone, n' dismissed them all somehow Then near the town of Heaven's Door we were seen one night By the man she was married to who knew wrong from right CHORUS By nightfall they'll surround me Too late to run or hide Anymore, anyway, I'm outta prayers and alibis My spirit has been crucified And although my faith's compromised I wish I were where I was a week ago this morning A week ago this morning in the arms of Josephine Anger burned in his eyes as he shot Josephine The he witnessed the side of me no one had ever seen My bare hands took his life, blind fury more than strength As he died I knelt and cried and said the rosary There was another witness who was watching with the Lord Word spread fast a man in black was seen near Heaven's Door I never meant to cause such grief, my flesh was weak for Josephine And soon a noose will fall around the collar of a priest CHORUS (repeat) TAG Still I wish I were where I was a week ago this morning A week ago this morning in the arms of Josephine
