Once upon a time, Eric and Jen were roommates in Yonkers, New York. Too many people lived in their house, so they decided to pack everything into a rental van and head west with one of their other (many) roommates. Some people almost strangled some other people on the long drive to Reno, but our heroes stopped in Denver and rode some roller coasters and made veggie burgers and drank beer and watched movies in a rock-star-worthy hotel room and so they made it home without any more anger or resentment. Jen got a good night's sleep and then picked up her guitar to tell the story.
You might notice that the song doesn't mention any of that stuff. Well, maybe a song ought to tell a story without telling a story or something, you know?
Lyrics
The boys drive and I ride, reclining in the back seat. We roll down the windows to smoke and my hair blows across my face. I am obsessing about time and space.
I am jealous of the folk singer on our little radio. I am grateful because she makes me want to put it all down. But it’s too dark to write and my cigarette lighter won’t light.
and then I remember that some words can come later...
We are like brothers.
We are armed to the teeth with our love
and our loyalty.
But who am I?
I am just some girl.
We’ve been chasing this dotted line for four or five days now and we are almost home. We put our smokes out in the ashtray so we don’t cause any more harm.
and we smile when we remember Colorado...
We are like brothers.
We are armed to the teeth with our love
and our loyalty.
But who am I?
I am just some girl.
Who am I?
Well, I am the girl.
