A sort of alternative Americana track about not recognizing the U.S. anymore, what with all the divisiveness out there. Composition, performance, guitars, vocals, arrangement, production, origination by paul iorio.

Story behind the song
I woke from a dream recently with the main melody and title lyric rolling around in my head and immediately grabbed my recorder to preserve it. And then verses started tumbling out, more than I could use. I recorded the final version on January 12, 2022, at my home studio in Berkeley, California.

WHEN I KNEW THE UNITED STATES
Music and lyrics by Paul Iorio

When I knew the United States
You could spend your weekends walking around
Without people asking, why you walking around?
I once knew the United States
When I knew the United States
People used to talk on the phone
Instead of staring at their screens all alone
You could even have a drink with your neighbor
When I knew the United States
You could board a jetliner with ease
Without doing some sort of striptease
I miss the USA
Here I am back in the States
It's been a long cold wait
Since I knew the United States
When I knew the United States
Outdoor concerts on the campus green
The only shooting was of Kodak scenes
And it's a dirty, rotten shame
When I knew the United States
There was always a good movie downtown
Like "The Graduate" and "Chinatown"
What happened to the United States?
When I knew the United States
They'd polish up statues of Lincoln
Instead of tearing 'em down -- what the hell were they thinkin'?
When I knew the United States
When I knew the United States
When I knew the United States
When I knew the United States
