I have been in love with music since the age of sixteen, when I sang at my father's funeral as tenor to my mother's lead. If there are any tapes, bring them to me and I'll destroy them. I progressed through gospel and ended up getting some classical training in high school. To keep it going, I joined Friendship Baptist Church Choir and have been ministering in song and theater ever since. I want to give you a positive word.

Story behind the song
When Christianity was taught to the enslaved Africans, it could teach them about Jesus but it couldn't tell them not to sing and dance with all the passions of Africa. Black Spirituals, indeed, came out of the specific pain and pressure of being African and American at the same time, in a country that hated us for being African. I hope the pain, and the joy, and the triumph, came out in my voice. For I, too, know the pain of being both African and American.
