Trash-pop, guitar rock and melodic miscellany.
Not so much a band as a bloke with a guitar and a laptop, The Smivets deliver a genre-bending blend of pop, rock, punk, prog and many other monosyllables.

Story behind the song
Another from my 2014 album No Wrecollection, presented for the Clickers Club "Strange Days" challenge, August 2017. This describes a real event that happened the previous year, which had a deeper than expected effect on me. All I did was lose my glasses and you'd think the world had come to an end. Perhaps it was what was happening to my dad at the time, and the growing realisation that that was probably my fate too. Anyway it got me thinking about the inevitable decline, and I got a half decent song out of it. The "Strange Days" angle comes from the fact that even the most mundane event can, in sensitive times, turn your previously stable world into an unfamiliar and frightening place.
Lyrics
I thought when I lost those glasses, that was the first sign. Though you tried to reassure me everything was fine, I felt quite distinctly that a line had been crossed, And more than just the stupid glasses had been lost. Oh, people lose stuff every day and it's nothing to dwell upon - You just have to shrug your shoulders, get a replacement and move on. So I carried on as normal, trying to pretend That what was beginning wasn't the beginning of the End. As the autumn fades to winter that will never see a spring, We slowly wave goodbye to everything. You see, the thing about glasses, unlike wallet, phone or key, Is they're pretty fundamental - I can't work, drive or even see. They really are the one thing that I can't do without, So if I can simply lose them, I think my lights are going out. So as the autumn fades to winter that will never see a spring, Perhaps it's time to say goodbye to everything.

I am with Ken! But I will still try to say something: Your songwriting skills are beyond belief. This little every day song about glasses, reaches out to touch so many aspects of life: The fear of getting older, the fear of going blind ( :)), the fear of Alzheimers, the roles you play in your marriage, the manly fear of getting sick (whine), but also the reflection on those little things that could have a huge impact on your life. The production is honest and analogue, a tribute to the basic part of music: Having something to say and doing it so it sounds real and honest. Thanks for that, Steve!

You create such great music Steve. I love the poignancy of this track which everyone can appreciate as we "mature" ;-). A Lou Reed vibe for me. Love the vocals as always.

Yet another personal and painful triumph of a tune, brilliant Steve.
Ridiculously powerful. Tugs at the heartstrings but keeps up a brave celebratory face. Damn. Damn.
