Story behind the song
it happened to me that's all
Lyrics
yep! i.m going to grow up and be a writer like mark twain. well dreams are dreams. and they fade away! somewhere along the way i became befuddled by it all! and started hiding inside myself. i think it was a long time ago when i was young! i can remember standing outside the band room with my trumpet but the building was empty what happened? was it the wrong day or time why was nobody there? i still do not know why! nobody ever told me. that was after i had been in the hospital for two weeks in a coma and when i came to they told me i had been run over. i had no memory. in fact a lot of things were fuzzy! i wonder about it a lot. there was the two story old house next to the oil well. it had an old barn and a glass gas pump that had not seen any gas for a very long time! there were chickens. and cats dogs tumble weeds and a big field out back. they started to build west high next door. we could see it from our bedroom on the second story of the old house. it was one big room with windows all the way around and a tiny bath room with a sink and a pull chain toilet. late one night we were still awake and saw a bunch of lights over where they were building the new school. the next day i came home from victor elementary school another new school they had just finished my mom and dad were working and came home a bit later than i did. when i got to the old house a man was standing by the front door. he asked me do you live here? i said yes! he asked does your daddy drive a sports car? i said yes! an old jaguar. i knew this because he had showed me the cat on the radiator and told me what it was. the man asked me about if i knew the license number? i told him sure! it's the same number that's on the flatbed truck over there. he said how is that? and i told him my dad always took the back license plate off and put it on the jaguar every time he drove it because the jaguar did not have any license plates. later i found out there had been a murder at the high school that night. and the murderer was seen driving an old foreign car. when i next saw my dad i got a lecture that went like. i know i told you to always tell the truth! but you need not elaborate like that to the police! just answer their questions and tell them no stories. well they caught they guy and it was not my dad or the jaguar! but they sure gave my dad a going over for a few day's. one of life's lessons i guess? i never looked at a cop the same way since. then we moved to a house right at the end of the runway for the torrance airport! the airplanes came so close to the roof it would shake the house. the house had a big bay window that looked right at the runway. one day i was sitting on the couch watching soupy sales. my mom was cleaning the rug. when a big bomber a military one came off the runway and never went up much. it came straight at us! it hit the t v antenna and tore it off the roof. i had froze in place on the couch! just sitting there as it came right at me! my mother was so pissed off she drove our car right through the hole the plane had made in the chain link fence. right down the runway to the tower she jumped out of the car and started yelling and shaking her fists at the men in the control tower. the army officer who came to the house the next day explained that they were practicing touch and go landings on a short airfield and were very sorry for the antenna and bought my mom the best one the hardware store had. we moved again soon after and the military bought up the whole neighbor hood and made all the people move out because it was unsafe to live so close to the end of a runway. duh! once when i was very young i lived on a street named narrot just off hawthorne boulevard across the boulevard was a giant brick building with three tall fat smoke stacks that always had stuff coming out of them on the side of the building was a giant black sign that said Union carbide i thought they were making batteries for my toy's all the while puffing a
