Story behind the song
As padawan to both Frank Zappa and Joe Satriani, Steve Vai's musical and technical styles are vast. Not that Steve was without talent before, as a leading example at Berklee college. My first experience of Steve Vai was Frank Zappa's 1984 album 'Them or Us', particularly the track 'Stevie's Spankin'' in which Steve plays a relatively slow but 'toneful' and winding solo that escalates into terrifying sounding arpeggios and ending on some trademark Vai wails. Awesome. Through Steve's guitaring (and Dweezil's it is worth saying) it was that album that turned me on to metal as a whole, funnily enough, rather than the contemporary bands like Slayer or Megadeth. There's a million styles, 'tricks' and techniques that Steve's employed over the years and I've not tried to cram them all in to one track, would that I were able to employ them myself! So I'm afraid there's no wah-wah talking madness, string snapping wammy bar abuse, nor the same riff explored by every instrument in every way possible with an orgasm of a crescendo. Sorry 'about that. :D The style I've gone for is when Steve turns things down a bit, with just a four piece sound, such as (evidently for my track) 'Boston Rain Melody' or 'Feathers'. A long while back I'd borrowed/learned a chord from the Passion and Warfare track 'Answers' (basically E major with an added '9th'), and I'd always noodled it with F# to give an ambiguous Lydian/Mixolydian feel. Then I heard Vai's 'Boston Rain Melody', and he'd also done exactly that. While I didn't really explore it in this track, it does also lend well to dropping in the occasional minor 7th or even whole tone scales, as Steve or even Frank might well do. I did consider a Zappa-esque track but this one is definitely 'with Frank in mind', as I'm sure Steve still does. The track title? The overall sound felt like a disappointed sigh.

This is not 'noodling' - this is a very thoughtful and considered composition, very well put together and of course exquisitely played. Great chords, expressive drums, bass groove and brilliant guitwork. The ghost of Frank, and Vai-esque pyrotechnics to boot. Nice one Stoob!
Jaw dropping - nailed the style and attitude. It's obvious that time was spent ensuring it was thought through in capturing the writing style as well, not just the solo. Bravo!
