Story behind the song
This song was written yesterday (oct23) at 2:30 in the morning. I was between sleepin' and still awake, when this tune started ringing in my head. I sat up in my bed and wrote the entire song in 5 minutes. Next morning when I woke up at first I'd forgotten about writing it, I looked at the lyrics and the song came back right away. Now the strange part, when I picked up my guitar,it was tuned in somekinda open D, and I can't remember tuning it at all, not 2:30 in the morning, fact is, I never use open tunings cause I don't like the sound much...anyway I recorded on my pc later that afternoon. When I played it back, the way the sound turned out, is almost kinda spooky 'cause usually I write HAPPY songs! The slidework is done with an old scratched up Zippo (guess it's even more scratched up now). And thanks to Steve Thorpe and the song "Trouble" for givin' me the inspiration to pick up my old acoustic guitar and bangaway on it!
Lyrics
A Rock and A Hard Place My mother started cryin' On the day that I was born My father started prayin' Lord, have mercy on our son Between a rock an' a hard place The place where I was born Between a rock an' a hard place Only place that I call home If it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all Without this hole in the ground I'd have nowhere to fall Between a rock an' a hard place The place where I was born Between a rock an' a hard place Only place that I call home If it wasn't for night time I'd never see the light of day If it wasn't for being so down'n'out I'd have no place to stay Between a rock an' a hard place On a bed of stone Between a rock an' a hard place Only place that I call home Well, once I had a woman But she left before too long If it wasn't for my right hand I'd get no love at all Between a rock an' a hard place The place where I was born Between a rock an' a hard place Only place that I call home If I had a million dollars I tell you how it would end If it wasn't for being so deep in debt I'd have no money to spend Between a rock an' a hard place The place where I was born Between a rock an' a hard place Only place that I call home -------------solo----------------- Misery an' trouble Is always 'round the bend Don't need no gipsywoman I know how it will end Between a rock an' a hard place The place where I was born Between a rock an' a hard place Only place that I call home Well, they say I killed a man I know it wasn't me My only way to heaven Will be swingin' from a tree Between a rock an' a hard place The place where I was born Between a rock an' a hard place On a bed of stone When I'm dead I'll lay On this bed of stone And all that will be left of me Will be my dyin' bones Between a rock an' a hard place The place where I was born Between a rock an' a hard place On a bed of stone With all this said an' done Lord, I still believe I'd turn down 'Ol Satan I would not make a deal Between a rock an' a hard place The place where I was born Between a rock an' a hard place On my bed of stone Johnny Rebb 2003
