Harry writes to May...
Harry writes to May to tell her of the circumstances of Ron's death. All the original optimism has gone and the realities of the front are apparent. Harry mentions the dream of most men, to get "a Blighty one" a wound not fatal but sufficiently sever to be sent back to England.
Harry's letter to May
Harry:
With much sadness and regret I write to you today
To tell you of the circumstance in which Ronnie passed away
We were standing talking in the trench waiting to advance
When Ronnie was hit by a sniper May...
He never had a chance
A genuine friend he was to me so cheerful and so tall
But his height was a constant worry and became his own downfall
Tall men are not well suited to the trench or fire pit
Far safer to be short like me...
Stand below the parapet
Oh May I can only hope that I'll see you again
And comfort you for Ronnies loss I'm sure he felt no pain
It will be a miracle if we get through this alive
Our dream is of the Blighty one...
A way we might survive
