Strange lyric this - I never really understood what it meant.
Again written in 2021, but I only got round to recording it 3 years later. During the recording process it dawned on me - it was written on the day we picked the dog up from the treatment centre, so it's about him. I genuinely didn't twig at the time.
Mysterious business this songwriting.
First light in the wasted smoke of Broken Town
Cold sweat regretful of the night gone by
Torchlight because the old networks have broken down
Not yet dissected by the pencil line
And I wish that I'd found you earlier
I might just have worked out a way to save you
Hard news slams down like a hangman's trap
Blared out from the silence of a telephone
Hard truth will break you if you hold it back
Dried out with the tears for those who might not come home
And I wish that I'd found you earlier
I might just have worked out a way to save you
Yes I wish that I'd found you earlier
I might just have worked out a way to save you
To save you
Red sky in the fading light of autumn time
Burnt through the rat-snares of invading black
Red eyes on the horizon for any haunting sign
That the one you long for has made it back
And there's a long list of things I thought I would say to you
Ill-begotten words of fondness and memory
And I thought I'd never say that I would pray for you
All forgotten in the dawn when you came back to me
And I hope you never get to know
Just what it took to save you
Yes I hope you never get to know
Just what it took to save you
To save you
To save you
To save you
To save you
