Mission Cafe is the result of a long-time rock drummer finally being able to record complete songs, thanks to recording software like Ableton Live, allowing me to sequence all of the instruments that I can't actually play. So the acoustic guitar will be a live recording, but a piano track will be sequenced, etc. Ironically, I no longer own a set of drums, so all of the drum tracks are sequenced, even though I could record those live if I still had the gear.
Nothing beats playing live... but you won't hear Mission Cafe anywhere.
Mission Cafe is influenced by every musician and song I've ever liked. I distill them down and drink deeply.
Seagull S6+Spruce Acoustic Guitar, Electro-Voice Raven Mic, E-MU 0404, iMac, Ableton Live, and a number of U-he plugins.
Ultimately, Mission Cafe's sound is based on the tools available, and shaped by a drummer's musical limitations. If all you have to make music is a tuba, a flute, and a kazoo, and you only know two chords on those instruments, then you're going to be making 2-chord tuba-flute-kazoo music. That's pretty much what goes on around here. Lead guitar tracks are very difficult to sequence and make sound good, so there is very little lead guitar in my music.
