Mike Goble is a guy who likes books and movies, particularly science fiction and fantasy. He's also a big fan of classic rock music. Mike grew up in Utah during the '80s and '90s, when things were awesome, rad, and sweet. He is the self-proclaimed founder, president, and sole member of the Society for Unpopular Nostalgia. He has a day job as a cytotechnologist, and lives near Fort Worth, Texas with his wife and five children.
I started my hobby of recording music when I was in college. I play a bit of self-taught guitar, and did a lot of experimenting with a 4-track in the past. I didn't do much recording for about 10 years after settling down and starting a family, but after I published my first novel, I began recording an audiobook.
I was a sideman in a college friend's surf/punk band for one week in the summer of 2002. I had previously recorded their demos and live performance with my 4-track. He asked me to do some backup guitar and backing vocals. I borrowed my brother's guitar and my sister's PA system for the show. We played a set on his back porch to a scattered crowd of about 20 people. The cops finally showed up for the noise complaint after the show was over and we were already putting our gear away.
My biggest influence is my brother Rob, who is also a musician and novelist. My sister Bonnie is also a big inspiration for me. My other writing influences are listed in the acknowledgements of the print version of my novels.
I used to use a Tascam 424mkIII for recording, but it burned out in 2019. Now I just have an off-brand preamp that feeds audio into an old Micron laptop running Windows XP with Audacity on it, although I recently got a digital TASCAM audio interface that I still need to try out when I get the time.
