Hip Hop General

I love, enjoy, and keep an open mind to all types of music but my favorite is hip-hop. Ive loved it since I was young. I've always been around music since my father used to sing and play the guitar for us. I started to get involved in writing rap lyrics at the age of 16. I've been doing it for about 7 years and some would say I'm pretty good, but I'll let you decide.
Band/artist history
I was the lead emcee/vocalist in a band called "Closed Caption" based out of Wolcott, CT. It was an original blend of funky rock, hip-hop and more. We are currently not playing shows due to the band loosing our guitarist but we are still making moves and will be back at it soon. Since then, I've been working on more solo projects to keep the writing process going.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I've played live shows with Closed Caption for the past year and a half. Mostly at local bars but we've also played at The Webster Theator in Hartford, CT. We've also been involved in several 'battle of the bands' events as well
Your musical influences
Mos Def, Common, Talib Kweli, Jay-Z, Pharoahe Monch, Kanye West, Jurassic 5, Eminem (the old not the new), Michael Jackson... once again (the old not the new). The list goes on but you get the idea. I've got 2 ears and music all around me so I could be influenced by anything.
What equipment do you use?
Microphones: Live- Shure Beta 59A Recording- M-Audio Luna
Anything else?
I'm just trying to be as original as can be in genre where artists have become so disposable it gives the artform a bad name. Many emcees trying to make it now a days are nothing but carbon copies of what's already out, making songs that come and go without any notice. Sometimes people get caught up in what they think Hip-Hop should be about and sound like, forgeting that it's an artform based upon word play and self-expression. If done correctly it can be about whatever you want it to be... so why try to limit it to whats heard on radio's and in clubs? It should just be.
