Band/artist history
Mentality Flow was a two man rap duo with MC Epic and K-Otic (another South Bend area emcee) that began around 1995. They released an EP entitled Hip-Hop For The Senses around 1996 with an initial press of 100 copies that they sold by hand. After selling out, they made subsequent presses of the album which also were sold out in turn. It featured production by MC Epic (known as C at the time) for three of the six tracks, and by DJ Strictnine for the remaining tracks on the album.
Shortly after the release of the Hip-Hop For The Senses EP, Epic began collaborating with Breon Warwick, after being introduced by a mutual friend and discussing music. Shortly thereafter the group Mentality Flow disbanded due to creative differences. Epic and Breon then began recording The $2.00 Project (a reference to the cost of a blank Type II tape), which was a collection of real-time recorded analog tracks with the majority of the production done by MC Epic and Breon. The only guest producer on the project was South Bend native 5-12, who produced a track which, after being recorded with Epic and Breon as the sole emcees, was re-recorded with a guest appearance by Todd Frozt.
This eventually led to the reformation of Mentality Flow, this time with Breon, Todd Frozt, and MC Epic (still using the name C) on the roster. They once again began working with DJ Strictnine for a new album. It was around this time that they changed the group name to Mentality and C changed his name to MC Epic. The subsequent album, Soundscape, was never formally pressed or released in any major capacity. There are, however, many copies in circulation. Some of the material from Soundscape has once again been made available on Mentality Unchanged, the new album/compilation by Breon Warwick.
Shortly after recording Soundscape, Todd Frozt moved to Washington D.C. With the absence of Frozt, they then recruited the like-minded emcee Mercury/Threshold from the group Seven Star Battle to fill the void in the lineup. The group recorded about twenty tracks with emcee Mercury and also began collaborating with up-and-coming emcee Robbie Crook form the Elkhart group Def Star. The group again recorded about twenty tracks with Robbie Crook. The best of the material recorded during this time period was compiled to create the album Liquid Mastery. There is no set release date, but the album should be available in the near future.
After the recording of Liquid Mastery, the individual emcees began to branch out into numerous solo projects as well as working with their other existing groups. Robby Crook can be found on his solo project, Knock The Wall Out, the Sin And Crook album, The Resume, and the self titled debut from Def Star. Mercury/Threshold appears on the Seven Star album Brainstorm and is currently working on a solo project as well. Breon Warwick also recorded an album entitled Ahead Of Its Rhyme which features his production skills throughout the album. He just compiled and released a second album entitled Mentality Unchanged. MC Epic is also currently working on two ongoing projects. He is in the midst of recording an album entitled Divinity which showcases his skills as a solo artist. There are still collaborations by all the members of Mentality, but the focus is definitely Epic's raw skills and emotionally deep, hard-hitting, gutter-style hip-hop.
The other project is an attempt to breathe life back into what Epic describes as the "creatively stagnant format of modern hop-hop." It is complete re-evaluation and re-creation of rap music from the ground up, with the end purpose being the introduction of progressive elements and format, while maintaining an old-school lyrical sensibility. An example of this new material is found in his live performance of This Is Not The End (Of The World) at Cheers Lounge. The track is a progressive collaboration with MC Epic's other side project, The Paul Neile Band, an experimental down-tempo/ trip-hop/ alternative rock group in which Epic is one of the main collaborators on all elements of production ranging from guitar, bass guitar, keys, analog synthesizers, drums, digital sequences, and samples. The lyrical motif of the track also reflects the vibe of the project.
Look for new material to be unveiled on MySpace, SoundClick, and at upcoming live events.
