The name "Dmote" was inspired by a Sydney, AU graffiti artist. As a high school student, a friend and I briefly wrote rhymes and tagged Central Wisconsin as "Dmote" and "Dmize."
I enjoyed rapping enough to do it for almost a decade - through my teenage years and early twenties. I eventually added an additional word, "Ranks," to become "Dmote Ranks." Why? Looking back, I was driven towards a first and last name because I was heavily influenced by Eminem. In my opinion, I was inauthentic; though my hardships were real, I was not true to myself as Dmote Ranks and I could not make piece with that. I stopped rapping in 2009.
Nowadays I am playing a banjo, yet still freestyling to hip hop instrumentals in my car. I love music, and it has been a shame to box myself in one way or another. Enjoy these snapshots of my life circa 2002-2009.
