Some artist were left out because of time constraints and was not a slight to their place in history. I struggled with finding a good place to fit tracks I picked out by, Run DMC, Digable Planets, KRS One, and LL Cool J as well as others. Others I left out because I’m trying to show you where my head is at. I purposely left out Kanye West, Eminem, Jay-Z, and Sean “PDIDDYPUFFNSTUFFDADDY” Combs, because I don’t think they are relevant to Hip Hop. I admit they might be relevant pop artist and cultural icons, but for as much for their bullsh***, than their musical creativity. Some artist are there like Beck because they’re fun and because of their Hip-Hopesque tracks.
Also there are several tracks by Azealia Banks, but absolutely zero Iggy Azalea.

First this MixTape was inspired by a love of beats.
Secondly, Beck has this line, “Let the dead beats pound all around.” Which always felt like it meant, among other things, all these sampled beats from artist past and present, these beautiful beats, floating around in the ether, pulled out by creative people and painted on audio surfaces in new and colorful ways, at the same time it was a theft it is always a homage. Hip Hop typifies that sentiment.
This MixTape was an experiment. It’s definitely not straightforward. It’s not a buncha new tracks thrown together on a compilation. These songs range from around 1986 to 2015 and was meant to be kinda of a concise retrospective of Hip Hop, not necessarily an accurate one. Most sub-genres of Hip Hop were touched on, from Gangster Rap, Jazzy Hip Hop, Turntable DJ’s, Bass, Chopped & Screwed, Trap, to Industrial Hip Hop.
