Music as a Sport?
Dec 5, 2010
I think we have seen the beginning of the end. On one hand, we have a light at the end of the tunnel if we are looking for the end of the modern business model of payola and fakes that is our current record label industry. On the other, we see things like battle of the bands, compete for your song to be on some commercial about a razor, American Idol and shows like it. It goes on and on. This is not a soapbox I have set here to tell you shit, while I grab my cape that says "Cpt. Obvious" on the back, because I know where I am. I am at a cool website that promotes expression through music that only really other artists can appreciate. The public has already had their minds numbed with consistent auto-tune, fist pumping e-z beats and disposable power pop. I am hoping, hoping that this place stays with the vibe it has, music as expression, not sport. These days I believe that if you can find talent in music that would not fit the top 40 or be featured on a top 10 reality show, then you are either an artist or someone who is yet to find their own artistry...regardless of any proclaimed level of expertise. I sincerely hope that someday we will have our music back. Music the asks for an emotional response, or can make you feel something other than "Hey, great beat" or "Nice Hook". Sound-scapes that can take you away to another universe are appreciated by a precious few and is only echoed in the chaos of a world we live in. Phones that can communicate with Martians and apps that can beam you up to see them have taken over meaningful conversations. Texting is the new way of avoiding any face time you have left. The internet has given us the power to take back what was once our own. We have a way to support great music, we just need to keep using it. I really like this site and appreciate all of the independent artists' work to keep it going. Happy Sunday!
