Raised in Albany, New York in a Christian home to Benjamin Odom and Delila Melrose Jacobs, I began singing the gospel of Christ at a very young age in the family singing group, known as the Odom Singers.
My career as a Minister of Music began in 1973, when my mother retired as Music Director at the Mount Olive Baptist Church. I then began to direct the choir and my leadership span was from 1973-1981 at Mount Olive. From 1979 to 1985, I was assistant to the Director of the Capital District Community Choir; Prof. Rudolph Stinney (now deceased). From 1981 to 1988, I was the Minister of Music at the Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, in Albany and was then called to the Metropolitan NTM Baptist Church and served as Minister of Music from 1988-1994. In October of 1981, I founded and directed the Odell Wesley Surgick Ensemble (named after my father-in-law who was a Pastor). OWS ministered from 1981-1994 and during that time, they recorded a 45-rpm record singing one of my first compositions, “God Is Not through with Me Yet.” A full demo album was also recorded by the group. Since that first song, I have written many songs and give all the glory and honor to God.
One of the proudest moments in my life occurred in 1991 as one of my songs, “Blessed Is The Name,” was sung by a 1,400 voice choir at the Hampton University Ministers Conference/Choir Directors and Organist Guild in Hampton, Virginia. I am Executive Director of DMO Music and Creative Arts Ministries.

Perpetual Praise
Nov 6, 2010
As I was mediating and fellowshipping with God and in His word, He placed a message in my heart that really opened my eyes. First He told me that He wants perpetual praise from His people, His true servants – He wants praise not just when we are looking for all the benefits that come from praising Him and when everything is going our way, but He wants that perpetual praise – a praise that should always be in the mouth of His servants. Perpetual? I had to look up the meaning for myself and this is what it says, Perpetual: constant, lasting or enduring forever, or for an indefinitely long time, eternal, permanent. Continuing indefinitely without interruption; unceasing. God is looking for perpetual praise. Don’t praise Him when everything in your life is going right and when you are looking for that special blessing, but praise Him on a daily basis, every minute, of every second of every hour, praise should be on the lips of every believer in some way, shape, form and fashion. To praise means to commend, applaud, magnify, glorify, express approval or admiration of – praise is to extol in words or in songs; it means to magnify. Praise is preoccupied with who God is and what He’s done. Praise is characterized by celebration – there is hilariousness involved. We are to shout the word in a victorious praise; dance a spiritual dance before the Lord; sing and shout with your spirit under control; play musical instruments. Psalm 146: 1-2 says, “Praise ye the Lord. Praise the LORD, O my soul. While I live will I praise the LORD; I will sing praises unto my God while I have my being”. This kind of praise is perpetual praise. While there is breath in our natural born bodies, there should be a spiritual praise unto God the Father at all times, just as Psalm 34:1 says, “I will bless the LORD at all times His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” God then went on to tell me that the reason some of us cannot praise Him perpetually is because we have taken to treating Him like a servant and not the King that He is! We sit around expecting God to be at our beckon call, treating Him like a common servant. We’ve taken away His majestic royalty – we’ve removed His crown of gold from His head and have sit it upon our sinful heads and now shout orders at Him and expect Him to do everything that we asks without any kind of real gratitude in our hearts. Yes, the word does say, praise Him for all of His benefits and that Christ did come as a servant, but the problem with that is, we begin to take advantage of Him – always asking, never giving and never taking the time to see Him for who He really is; never taking the time to praise Him for His pure awesomeness and power that He perpetually sows into our lives. He is God the creator, and ruler of all things. He is King of our lives and we need to treat Him as such. He doesn’t have to bow to our every need because He is the sovereign God – He can do what He wants, when He wants, however He wants and to whom He wants – that His sovereign will as the almighty majestic King of all!
