BLACC Diamond, born LaDeidra McCoy, explains that being raised as a PK [preacher’s kid] was not always easy.
“There were expectations in my childhood and especially during adolescence that often times produced stress,” BLACC Diamond remembers. “Growing up, I knew how to act and behave around the church to maintain a level of respect for my parents and their position, but for me it was sometimes just that –an act.”
First born of three children, BLACC Diamond shares, “I was not a bad child. I just had my own thoughts, opinions, and ways of doing things that may not have always met the standards of others. So instead of exercising my individuality, I settled and became what is often referred to as a “yes man”.”
Classifying herself as a ‘puppet for the people’, BLACC Diamond lived her life to please others. “Everyone was happy except for me,” BLACC explains. “Many nights I felt somewhat confused after hearing my parents preach at me about the importance of being yourself, because I realized that being myself often led to the appearance of rebellion and punishment.”
Although mind boggling; the confusion was the least of BLACC Diamond’s worries. She figured that being a “puppet” for her family and the saints wasn’t all that bad until shortly after her sixteenth birthday when her father, Dr. Timothy D. McCoy, passed away from Leukemia, leaving her hurt, depressed, lonely, and walking aimlessly into the arms of the World.
