TV Bad
Mar 9, 2010
Has anyone been watching the latest addition to the Battlestar Galactica franchise? It’s bad. I mean really, really bad. BSG already has plenty strikes against it. Like why would their civilisation share in almost all of our culture, but leave behind things like measurements and curses? You’re telling me a word like ‘indubitably’ can travel the universe unaltered, but the f-bomb can’t? And coming on the heels of an already pap story, Caprica brings with it all new kinds of bad. It’s painful to watch the new show trying to shoehorn itself into the cannon of a series whose ideas started to fall apart after four episodes.
Don't Trust Teenage Boys
Mar 8, 2010
Why are girls still letting their boyfriends take naked pictures of them? I can remember a time when if a guy wanted some ‘blue’ photos of his girl, he had to make due with some hastily-snapped Polaroids—he couldn't take any raunchy film photos, since developer shops frown on home made smut. Polaroids helped limit the sharing and distribution of amateur porn, and a girl could feel relatively safe that the sight of her goods wouldn't go farther than her man's circle of friends. With digital cameras, you can have high-res amateur porn up and on a web site in minutes. A girl’s romantic gesture of revealing photos for her significant other can now end up as Google fodder for millions of pervs with just a few mouse clicks. And judging by the thousands of sites dedicated to amateur raunch, this is happening at an at an alarming rate. Sure, there are plenty of ‘amateur’ pics and movies that on the up-and-up, created and submitted with consent from all parties involved. But it doesn’t take seasoned smut wrangler to see that lots of these saucy materials smack of being shared without the models’ knowledge (at least until it’s too late, that is). I hate to call attention to MTV, but it aired a special last month called ‘Sexting in America: When Privates Go Public.’ It quoted a study saying that almost four percent of teens 12-17 with mobile phones have transmitted sexy images or videos of themselves. I’m no anti-porn nut; I’m a male in his twenties with broadband, after all. But as I near the average age of spawning, I can’t help but worry that one day a teenage daughter of mine might end up with her unmentionables on the internet thanks to some jackass boy.
Wall Mice
Feb 2, 2010
We have mice. And not in the good way. There are several of the little buggers running amok in the walls of our house. Normally this would go unnoticed, but their scent is driving our small dog nuts. Spaghetti is (apparently) half beagle, leaving her with a nose made for tracking. And the aroma of wild animals sight-unseen has left her with her nose plastered to the wall for most of the afternoon.
