"RIDE THIS B**** TILL THA WHEELS FALL OFF!" That is the attitude toward life P.O.P.E. the DON KING brings to his music. Being raised in SOuth Los Angeles California then moving to the smaller city of Lansing Michigan, P.O.P.E. has seen more than the average man. "Most cats can't keep up with the speed of life! Pride and Power is what I preach because that's what you need to survive this world." Survival is something P.O.P.E. learned from the streets and his grandfather. "My Grandad stayed in Lansing. My mom tried to keep me from getting into too much trouble and send me to Lansing with my Grandad. Having him as a father figure was the best thing she did for me. His lessons have saved my life more than once." P.O.P.E. first developed his style in High School. "I didn't start learning the art of Hip Hop untill a homework assignement. My first rap was a book report. A lot of cats wanted a copy of it. That's probably why my verses stay on topic and aren't random.THANK YOU MRS. Demott!" P.O.P.E. studied Jay-Z, RAKIM, NAS, and 2PAC. "I would pay attention to how they put a song together because they are the best. I wopuld get game from interviews too. Michael Jackson probably helped me the most. I remember he said "too many artist get in the way of the music. Ride with the vibe. That's what I do."
Without a major release, P.O.P.E. has opened for Ludacris, B.G. and E-40. He has also done tracks and verses for countless other independent artist. With his new mix tape "Pride & Power" coming out P.O.P.E. hopes to change the game.
Pride and Power is a theme constant in the DON KING'S music. The first single "TILL THA WHEELZ FALL OFF", featuring child hood friend Money Tight, not only is certified club/radio hit but also has a message. "This song should start your day. We gonna go hard and set the bar. Seperate the real from the fake. That drive to achieve your goals in life, 'till tha wheels off my ride...Then I'm gonna hover baby!"
ON ONE is another great example of Pride and Power. "I came up with the idea for the song after talking about why I rap about shootin' a mutha fucka. I'ts not random violence. If someone threatens the life of you or your family, you aint shit if you dont protect them. If you rob me you gonna try to kill me anyway, so i'm a kill you first. you threaten my life, my means of feeding my family, I'll kill you before I let me or them die."
Exclusive is a unique track about that special girl. "That Exclusive shit is rare. If she exclusive, she just that. She aint showin her titties and ass to everybody. She exclusive. She aint a big ass flirt. She Exclusive. She can be Super Hed in the Bed but that's exclusive for me. That's real king shit. A wise man will take pride in his woman and recognize the power that foundation can have."
