I am a musician, who was trained in theatre and re-entered music through circuitous roads. Unfair enough, but here I am.
I mainly sing Bengali folk music, particularly the songs of Lalon Phokir, but have also written songs of my own, some of which have been set to music by my friend and collaborator, Samrat Chakrabarti, a musicial genius....
The two albums here reflect both sides of my musical creativity. While "Jewel in the Man" represents my work with the music of Lalon Phokir, "Lebu naa Lankaa" refers to my urban mind, my Calcutta psyche. Although they appear to be very different from each other, my awareness of the One World we live in brings them together. Art knows no boundaries, music speaks no language...
Consequently, in my theatre and film work, I am always working covertly (and sometimes not too covertly) to integrate music with acting and movement, creating total performance that also speaks transculturally, universally....
