DEFINITION: ProjectBabies is a term used to describe an individual(s) who have overcome struggle, adversity, negativity, a persevered and became a stronger more positive individual.
The ProjectBabies are a collective of individuals who grew up in Watts, Ca., Nickerson Gardens to be exact. Lawrence Willis gathered together 8 artists to spearhead the creation of The ProjectBabies, who are J.J. aka Smurf, Tudy Mack, Lil Louie, Y.G., Kountry, and PZ, along with Lawrence Willis, came together and decided to do something more positive with their lives. Being born into one of the toughest places in Southern California to live, placed many challenges upon this group of individuals. Imagine walking down your block and having to go through the drug dealers, gang bangers, prostitutes, and more just to get a carton of milk.
The decision to want to make something more of their lives was a simple one. Music, movies, and fashion would be their platform to show those still in the projects, they don't have to live a "hood" life just because they live in the hood. ProjectBabies is not just one sound or one style. However, it's a melodic blend brought about through the uniqueness of each of the different individuals.
J.J. aka Smurf, was Lawrence Willis' childhood friend. He is considered the Don of the group due to his experiences gained from being in the streets. Tudy Mack is the group wild card. He was raised by J.J. and Lawrence. Though he's described as not being very good with reasoning, he's easily reasoned with. Lil Louie is the baby of the bunch. He doesn't expect a lot, but he needs a lot. E-monk, simply put is the Prince of the street. Kountry is the soul of the group blending old school, r & b, and that gangsta vibe. Y.G. is considered to be the most aggressive rapper in the game today. He has so much talent that he's still trying to find his way. PZ is the producer who caters to each artist's individual style. His beats create works of art customized to each artists unique style and flow. Lawrence Willis is the man behind The ProjectBabies. He can be wild, yet understanding, aggressive, yet patient. The key to his persona is that he knows there is a mission to be accomplished and won't stop until it has been. They all share one main objective which is to bring about a positive perspective to the projects worldwide.
Their music embodies the voice of the streets. Work, life, love, happiness, nothing seems easy when you live the ways of the hood. Their songs illustrate the color of life when living in the projects. Each artist paints their own rendition of life in the projects with every track they lace. Be it life behind bars, selling drugs to make ends meet, or trying to keep love alive, they keep it real and keep it hood. In the end, make no mistake, they're all just ProjectBabies doing their part to make things better in their projects and in projects around the world. They're doing what they need to in an effort to survive.
