About The Station
The original reason the station was created...
February 25th, 2009: The station was originally created with the purpose of helping to keep the blues genre of music alive. You can't map the development of today's popular music without starting somewhere near rhythm and blues musicians like Muddy Waters or Howlin' Wolf, who influenced the slew of skiffle bands in England that produced such legends as Eric Clapton or the Rolling Stones, who were followed by sound-bending greats, like Led Zeppelin or Jimi Hendrix, who influenced ... well, you see the trend here. “The Blues (notice the caps) are not a formula, the Blues are about emotion, passion, and the spaces between the notes, if The Blues make you sad, you ain’t listenin’ right.”
By thinking about the intersections of whites, blacks, and others around the blues, our listeners will deepen their understanding of discrimination and prejudice. They will also come to understand the ways in which music can, or cannot, create opportunities for people of different cultures, and with varying degrees of power, to relate to one another and find common ground.
While the blues started as an African American music, it is now a music that has been embraced by people in different cultures, black and white, around the world.
