Overlay is an illegitimate child born in mid 2008 to the depressing beauty of a snow and fog filled Newfoundland spring. They are a band hard to define – a bulk of their material is lyrically driven, blended with the sounds of rock, folk, funk, and everything else in between. Overlay is truly appreciated during their live shows, combining unadulterated rock and roll with high energy and climatic filled performances.
They spent most of 2008 honing their sound, adding life to vocalist John Feltham’s endless sea of interpersonal and socially conscious lyrics, while collaborating on new material. Overlay has grown from a two piece acoustic project between Feltham and percussionist Martin Ordonez, and a stint with Scott Skanes on lead guitar (both of whom play on the EP) and also a while with Mark Walsh on the drums, to the current four piece electric band; John Feltham (vocals and guitar), Martin O’Driscol (bass and vocals), Gene Browne (lead guitar) and Chris O'Brien (percussion).
The band has an impressive catalogue of material and continues to develop new music, with plans to record a full length album in the early spring of 2009.
Their debut EP, “Kick the Habit”, was recorded in the hills of St. John’s, Newfoundland at Black Cat Studios, and was mixed and engineered by Steve Colbourne (Steve and his gal Lisa Samson provide backing vocals on the album). The sessions were filled with shenanigans and other random black magic and provide only a small taste of what's to come
