Going Green with Easy-Bake
Jul 21, 2009
When I was a kid, playing with food wasn’t limited to civil engineering with mashed potatoes and gravy at dinnertime. We could literally play with food using toys such as the Easy-Bake Oven and Incredible Edibles. While I was nostalgically considering those days, I thought it would be fun to set up light bulb powered miniature baking system for my granddaughter, Destiny, who just turned four. Retrofitting an old toaster oven with a screw-in light fixture was a fairly simple feat. To keep in line with today’s “green” philosophy, I opted to install a new LED powered light in lieu of the passé incandescent bulb. Destiny was delighted at first, but became a bit disappointed when the miniature cake in the oven showed no progress. Albeit leaving the unit powered up for those two weeks probably used more energy than an incandescent bulb would devour in forty minutes, I can still claim that our operation was consistent with green principles. At least that was the color of the stuff when her mom finally removed it from the oven. © 2009 Alan D. Taylor
