Named after an area of Istanbul in which people of different origins, races, religions and cultures have rubbed shoulders since time immemorial, the Pera Ensemble was founded in 2005 by two Istanbul musicians, Mehmet Cemal Yesilcay und Ihsan Özer. In the fifteen years or so that these two musicians have been working together (as founding members of the Ensemble Sarband, Ferahfeza, the Emre Ensemble, Concerto Köln etc.), they have established an international reputation through their numerous concerts at home and abroad. Pera concerts combine the musical tradition of Ottoman music (with its vocal and instrumental virtuosity) with historical and contemporary European music; their performances are informed by musicological and historical research. This versatile ensemble, whose size and composition make it well placed to meet the demands of its chosen repertoire, is made up of musicians who are all experts in their field.
