Richard Hair (b.1983) graduated from The University of Newcastle with a B.Mus (Hon I) and the faculty medal in 2004, having studied composition with Colin Spiers and Damien Ricketson. During his time as an undergraduate student he was recipient of the 2002 Music Festival Composition Prize and the 2003 Music Lover’s Club Prize for Composition. In 2005 he was named 2MBS-FM/Willoughby Symphony Orchestra’s Young Composer of the Year.
Richard is passionate about cinema and the vital role music plays in film, and in 2006 was approached to assemble and teach the film music elective course offered as a part of The University of Newcastle's undergraduate B.Mus degree. At this institution Richard has also been engaged as an examiner of undergraduate composition portfolios, conducted the harmony and aural bridging course, and presented film music and composition seminars to area high school students.
Despite having written more than thirty works for a variety of ensembles (ranging from solo instrument to orchestral), it is only his more recent music that Richard believes to be of a suitable standard for public consumption.
Enrolled in a Master of Creative Arts degree since 2005, he is currently preparing his thesis (entitled Developing 21st Century Art Music Repertoire) for submission.
