The Amaro Del Formed: 1988, Belgrade, Serbia - Years active: 1988 through present - Ansamble’s main members: Branislav Spasojeviæ, founder, leader and singer; Milena Božoviæ, contrabassist, singer; Darko Žeželj, guitar player, back vocal; Marko Milovanoviæ, guitar player, back vocal; Nicu Enache, accompanying member, percussionist - The name Amaro Del comes from Gypsy language and it means “our Lord”. The word “del” also means “paradise”, “heavens” and “universe” and it originates in the ancient Inidan word “deva”, which was used to express goodness and altruism. - At the very start the members of the Amaro Del chose to collect and perform the traditional music of Gypsy troupes from various parts of the world (Serbia, Hungary, Russia, Romania, France, Poland, Moldavia, India, Azerbaijan but also Romanian folk songs). In order to preserve the authenticity they cooperated with ethnomusicologists, they traveled and learned, listened and recorded Gypsies in the field as they played and sang their original traditional music. Gypsy music is recognizable by its pronounced sensitivity and lyrical symbolism. While performing, the Amaro Del always tries to add in a touch of their own feelings and understanding, and the two specific vocal soloists, music arrangements and first-class instrumentalists fully differentiate this ensemble from any other group that deals with this kind of music.
