Before the universe was created, David Martel knew his calling was to make music. So he devised a scheme: get born, and take it from there. Those wheels were set in motion one night in the late 1900's when sperm and egg collided just south of Montreal. Immediately after bornding, he wanted to learn how to sing. Only problem was, every time he opened his mouth all that came out was a high-pitched cry, usually accompanied by a wave of snotty tears. “Infancy…" he thought. "Who needs it?" Lucky for him, one day as he was wandering around in his crawler and going to the bathroom in his pants, he stumbled into a time machine and skipped ahead to the year 2006, making him the first man since Neil Armstrong to travel through time. First thing he wanted to do in his new adult body was to test out the ol' pipes. So he took to the streets to sing and play his guitar for anyone who had ears to hear. Producer Dave A. Sturton (Jean LeLoup) just happened to be out that day and caught a few songs.
Sturton approached Martel after his set and that day, they decided they should start making sweet music together. A week later Martel ended up going to Sturton’s Production DNA studio in Montreal, and then again the week after… and then again, and so on. Each time they connected they would invite different players for every session taking them a step closer to what has become Martel's first solo effort, I Hardly Knew Me (Kindling Music/Warner).

MTV LIVE... could use your help.
Feb 23, 2008
hi there, pretty friendly-face. there's this thing coming up on MTV called "Mainstream vs Underground". (i too had to use a dictionary to figure out where those words came from???) They're looking for underground Canadian bands to "discover" and invite them to play on the show... LIVE! yeah. i wouldn't mind that opportunity at all, actually! and you can help!!! just email feedback@mtv.ca. tell 'em who i am, and ask them to go have a listen my music on this myspace page. The more people that email them, the better chance i have. anyway. could be a pretty swell opportunity. i'd like to go for it. so if you'd take a moment or two to help out, that would be delightful! thanks so much. you're my friendship. i'm david martel
In the News

article in BANG BANG hi friends. woah... there's an article about me in the current issue of BANG BANG (free montreal francophone music zine) in the RADAR 2008 section.... yaay! Photobucket here's the english translation: With a similar name, one could expect someone with a future audition for Star Academy, ready to attack the commercial radio stations with prefabricated music. But this is far from the case. Rather, we have a young Anglophone man, singer of the Montreal band onlyforward, who is embarking a solo adventure with his folk sound. And the result is more than interesting. We only have to listen to his song "Cancel All Your Plans", which would have fit perfectly into the original soundtrack for the film ONCE, to be convinced (moreover, the live version of this song, which can be heard on his MySpace page, will be saved for the album as the intensity of that night at Yellow Door was unique). But behind this music is definitely a character. David Martel seems to have come straight out of a box of surprises, always ready to do an impersonation, throw out a sarcastic comment, or to amuse those around him. As soon as you meet him, you want to know more, convinced that the time spent in his company will be extremely pleasant. His first album I Hardly Knew Me, recorded at DNA Studios, will be release in May on the Toronto-based label Kindling Music, but it will be available on iTunes in March. After that, show after show, tour after tour, more solo than with his band, all across Canada. Its worth it to note that David Martel is also a chef at Lola Rosa Café where he organizes Dinner and a Show evenings, taking care of everything from A to Z, from the preparations of vegetarian meals, to table service and right through to the show at the end of the night. In short, a man to be married.
