Poetikiss born Monique Lewis was raised in New Haven, CT in a far off housing project on Brookside Avenue with her mother, 3 sisters and her late grandmother. As the baby of the bunch she was a flashy and charismatic youngster who would put on shows with her sisters for family and friends. Exploring her colorful imagination through singing, writing songs and stories she was inspired to write poetry as well. With her new outlet she began to use her writings and songs to express her feelings, emotions and concerns.
Life experiences as a young woman and going through growing pains made her poetry and writings have variety and depth. Innocent childlike pieces about life, love and changing the world, to deep and intense poetic melodies about confusing, disvalue, darkness and emptiness. In the midst of her lines she discovered a rhythm, a hidden song that only she could read. A powerful voice speaking through her words . Digging deeper into her writings allowed her to discover a poetic sound with an aggressive presence. Poetikiss the lyricist was born.
" As I speak I'm touching y'all with eclectic speech, electric fleets of energy attacking feet, excepting me a remedy for lyric relief. No time for beef or enemies I'm trying to teach." Along with clever wordplay and outside of the box lines Poetikiss infuses poetry with street parables, lyrical sonnets with love ballads and "picture book" storytelling which places you in a specific moment or time . Her lyrical abilities received mention in the Source magazine “unsigned hype” column for her contribution to a track titled “Inhale the poison” from a compilation album by local Connecticut artist. Poetikiss opened up for 50 Cent in Hartford, CT, has traveled outside of her home state to perform, and she's featured on local street dvd projects as well.
Poetikiss independently released her first CD titled Poetically Speaking Vol.1. and has also teamed up with a local alternative rock band where she features as a poet. Poetikiss is a woman with a drive and fiery passion for her craft . This same fire is put into her live performances . Transforming into a raspy voiced, voluptuous stature with a commanding presence, Poetikiss grabs her audience attention and takes them on a journey to Lyrics Avenue ." Lyrics Avenue is a place I bring the listener or viewer, a place where they see the world through my eyes, hear music through my ears, understand and feel what's in my heart." Striving to be a powerhouse of influential music, film, art, poetry, fashion, literature and more Poetikiss continues to build and enhance her craft daily.
Poetikiss is involved with organizations and businesses in the fashion field as well as non-profit organizations that help empower the community. She is the founder and creator of DANIELS PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM. It is a program she created to give youth of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures, the opportunity to come together and express themselves through dance, music, story telling and acting while nurturing their self-esteem and self-confidence. " Giving back is mandatory for me it's the only way I can continue on my journey. It's my job to inspire the uninspired and to encourage everyone I come in contact with ."
Poetikiss has a voice and story that should be shared felt and heard. A voice that can encourage a nation to do better and perform great exploits in their lifetime.
