saintfrancis began as a solo side project in 2005. After francis mcewan's dreampop band The Houses had dissolved, combined with an unparalleled period of personal upheaval, francis discontinued attempts to complete the debut Houses album on his own, shelved the remaining tracks and began working on an entirely new set of songs. The name saintfrancis was suggested for the project by a co-worker, notably in jest, yet was adopted immediately not only for its blatant irony but also because it seemed to complement the overall feel of the material. The debut album "primordial" was recorded between late 2005 and September 2008. This album saw several tracks reach the number one position in the soundclick shoegaze charts during the fall and winter of 2008, most notably "clever ships," "demon," "there are storms" and "your signal has faded." The follow-up album "chimera" was released on December 31, 2009. A slightly more varied release than its predecessor, "chimera" is somewhat mercurial overall, thematically linked to the highs and lows of influences both internal and external. It is a piece that is often experimental in parts, wielding a variation in tempo and soundscape reflective of the flux and uncertainty of our era. Rehearsals are currently under way, and live shows are planned for the near future. Work has also begun on the third saintfrancis album, one that is shaping up to be a rather more bright and introspective release than the previous two albums.
