Chain Of Bones

Yesterday I saw two vultures Fighting over a dead snake in the road. Hurtling down this mountain Into the setting sun They rose before me and marked my passing; My time has not yet come. ~ This morning I saw a chain of bones Testifying in the sun That all bonds of the flesh must be broken. In the end we all belong to trhe vultures And if we truly have a home up in the sky We must go there alone... ~ Out on this road a steel guitat is always playing Mournfully upon the wind. The miles are marked by abandoned ranches, The rusting hulls of old cars; The lifeless eyes of roadkilled creatures questionong The reasonsfor our passing... ~ Fence posts and rusty wire Won't keep Coyote from his supper. His next meal is anything that crosses his path. He is the eternal optimist. He never sings in protest; he sings for life, And to give meaning to the night. ~ In the cool light of another morning I pass through this country, never to return. The hushed creatures emerge from hiding. The coyote picks up a chain of bones And trots down the road with his head held high In defiance of his inevitable fate. ... Lost Hills
