Album Review (Wrek) I've written a fair share of reviews. For those who do not know me - it should be said... I only listen to Gospel music. I never compare Holy Hip Hop offerings to secular artists - for me, there is no comparison. I desire the pure ministry of people who put Scripture over beats. Gospel M.C.'s are on a completely different playing field and should be treated in light of the Light we have received as Christians. That being said, Ronin's offering "In the Heart of a Dark Man in the Light" offers up everything i look for in a Gospel album. Having given the project an honest listen I can say that, at least in it's verbal presentation, Ronin seems to have a real desire to reach people for the cause of Christ by sharing much of what he has experienced personally. His lyrics tend to sway to the darkness he finds as he reflects inwardly: which is fitting considering the title. For me... the production ranged from very good to different with a little not sure in between. Some interesting instrument choices were made but overall the tracks are solid. The mixing is adequate, I have heard terrible audio from albums that sell in stores. Thankfully, someone put enough time into mixing the songs that they have an overall well balanced sound. My biggest problem with this album is not the name, which is a tongue twister all by itself but Ronin's delivery. I don't know if this is his first album or how long this brother has been rhyming, but he has a young vocal tone. Having not officially met this guy - he appears like one who will come off with a much heavier sound than he does... but that isn't really the problem. Many of the songs have a first verse whose pocket is perfect and then a following verse that sounds as if too many words were squeezed in or perhaps the material was not known well enough. The 7th track (whose name escapes me at the moment) is marred by a female singer who didn't really do a good job of convincing me that she belonged on the song. Having said all of that - Ronin is a guy I would feel comfortable enough to have come to my church and minister... and that really should say enough. If I had to give the project a score - it would teeter between a 7.5 and an 8 out of 10. It has been added to the collection of Gospel music on my iPod and has breathed a fresh perspective into my ears even if it isn't my favorite album. I look forward to hearing the next project from this brother. If he takes advantage of every opportunity to use this album as a platform to reach others - he will no doubt sound like a pro next time out, and that is really what should happen. We offer our music not only to the people - but to our Lord first... it should constantly chase after His refining work within us and get better with age. When Ronin returns, I'm sure his rhyme flow maturity will be much stronger - and I can't wait to hear it.
