Started my music playing the coronet in 5th grade....when I got to 7th grade , the band director suggested I join the baritone horn section and the school provided the instrument...a beat up old horn that was in the closet at the school for years prior....
In 8th grade I was offered a spot in the "stage" band (more of a jazz group) and played the bass lines of the tunes on the baritone horn...through that year the band director convinced the school department to purchase an electric bass and amp (Fender Musicmaster and Traynor Combo). I was allowed to take it home for the summer between 8th and 9th grade and was given about half dozen "summer school" lessons from the band director free of charge (he was pretty much learning at the same time)
9th grade was a huge on the spot learning experience for me on bass, the guitar was essentially mine for the year, had a best friend who played the drums and we used to have small combos including school mates with trumpets and saxaphones, playing at benefits and the like....that's where my love of performing in front of an audience began.
When I got to high school, 10th grade, I continued with the stage band playing bass guitar as well as in the marching band playing the baritone horn doing parades and HS football half time shows. My last marching half time show was on December 14, 1976, at Schaefer Stadium, Patriots vs Buffalo Bills and OJ Simpson, who I had to stand beside on the sidelines while lining up for the halftime show.
