Just an old geezer-love music- retired geologist-spent many years in Latin America and love Latin music. It is interesting to note how the music has developed over the past 50 years or more. Many of the old classic latin songs are still being recorded, but in much different versions. Experimenting with music and developing new sounds is part of the game, but not every new version of a song succeeds or becomes better than the original version. Take for example Malaguena and the many, many versions that has been produced over the years. Trini Lopez produced a very sentimental version of it, much liked in the sixties (I still love it.) The same song, produced by Mariachi Azteca much later, takes a very different approach to the song and produced a version that in its Mariachi form perhaps has no equal. Many other version don't even remotely compare to the above (opinions may vary) The introduction of Hip Hop or rap in Latin music is debatably successful. Somehow, it seems to fit the temperament of this music about like a a parrot in a canary cage,--the music loooses a good deal of its very romantic, sentimental or delightfully lusty soul that is so characteristic of it and sets it apart . Having said this much, no doubt a lot of all you from a much younger generation will stamp me as an old fool, but there is more to music than a simple (and often monotone) beat.
