$$$$ The Legend of Joe King $$$$
Remember the Beatles promotional? In case you don't... for months, broadcasters on the radio would break into songs and say "The Beatles are coming! The Beatles are coming!" Then, the song would resume playing. Nobody had ever heard of the Beatles, or gave a damn for that matter. After about 6 months of this, the Beatles came to america and their career was instantly launched. By that time, their name was so indelibly stamped on the minds of the public, they were an overnight sensation.
Some years back, one of our writers did PR work for a locally popular band in the Miami area. Every venue they played had a little statement on the flyer that said "Possible appearance by Joe King." Since he never appeared, radio DJs during interviews started asking the band, "Who is Joe King?"

Not really being sure themselves what their PR man was up to, they tapped danced around the question making it even more of a mystery. Finally the largest club in the area booked the band, on the condition that Joe show up. He wouldn't have to play or talk, just show up.
Playing this particular club, was the ticket into a lot of A list venues. The campaign had been successful, but it had backed the band into a corner. So the PR man hired a guitar player and put him in an obvious disguise. He showed up at the club in a white limo, with cowhorns on the hood. The band announced him as "The Legendary Joe King .. making his final public appearance."
He picked up a guitar on stage... played a few rifts and then backed off, saying he didn't want to get in the middle of their gig. He had just dropped by to say "Howdy."

The crowd went absolutely wild. It was all the bouncers could do to keep them under control. It was the talk of the town .. The band? .. well, they were known as the band that got Joe King to come out of retirement. They played all the best clubs and could have gone on to stardom, except for musical difference, one of them getting married and all the usual things that cause groups to break up. They never knew the identity of Joe King, or that it was a promotional.
Well, guess what?... Joe (or Joe Jr?.) has surfaced again and this time, he's the editor of a newspaper! (Well sorta,.. LOL) It's a humourus publication and that's the best we can say about it.
