I always had music on my mind or in my head as long as I can remember. My parents and family were great influences, the were all classical music buffs, especially my grandfather, Chester. He would always give his opinion on music, you could count on that. My folks bought me a violin when I was nine years old, I remember actually really liked playing the thing. If I wasn't such a big dude I would probably still play the one, I could always take up the cello. We moved during the violin time from Anchorage to Seward, unfortunately there was no stringed instrument classes there. I practiced when I could but eventually dropped violin for the trumpet. There was an excellent band teacher there named Mr. Crisp. He looked like Louis Armstrong and could play like him to. He was a great influence in my life, he was a good teacher and disciplinarian. I wanted to play like Herb Alpert or Al Hirt, but things change in a young mans life and I eventually dropped trumpet after another family move. Although during the trumpet time my mother took up the classical guitar and became quite proficient at the instrument. My taste in music changed as I grew into my teenage years, started listening to rock, (probably because I wanted to rebel) really liked Jimi Hendrix, still do, just don't listen to him as much anymore, plus all the othere rock bands from the 60's and 70's. Pink Floyd, the Who, Beatles, etc.etc.etc. When I mover away from home I wanted to be a rock star like all good American kid
