To rap fans in the bay area, Joey Shellz is likely a household name. A now 21-year old Fairfield celebrity, Joel Thomas has made a name for himself in his community as a living legend through his eccentric style of production. Using only a combination of Steinberg's Hypersonic 2 VSTi and FL Studio, he paints the picture he admires in his head. At age 13, Joel received a program from his father as a Christmas gift. "Magix Hip-Hop Music Maker..." he laughs; "That's where it all began. All you do is put together pre-made loops and bass-lines to make beats... But I would go at it for hours! I remember bragging around Armijo; this was when school just started and I wanted to seem cool..." Joey says, sighing while poking through his BlackBerry. "A kid was like 'you make beats on what... Fruit (Fruity) Loops?'" It was on my mind all day and I had to know what the hell Fruit Loops was!" Long since then, he's still using that very program that struck his curiosity.
