Influenced abroad from his childhood in Asia, American Samoa, and mainly “Westside” California – the producer/beatmaker formerly known as “The Juice County Chief” is ready to trademark the music industry with his vicious interpretation of music through Beats… Born Jacob S. Atafua in Mission Viejo, California & producing now with a growing presence as “BRIX” – Orange County will not be the only place you find his production credits in the future ahead of him. Armed with FL Studio, the love of music, and 10+ years of perfecting his craft, Brix continues to shock artists with the possibilities of making Anthem-like beats with limited resources. Needless to say, the shock factor for this producer is fuel enough to keep him striving for recognition amongst his idols Dr. Dre, Just Blaze, & Alchemist to name a few…Growing up, Jacob was exposed to the Motown Era in which his mother and aunts made abundant around the home. Mother – the church pianist, father – a bassist, sister – a cellist, and Jake himself an average violinist and trumpeter. At 13, Jake relocated overseas to Shanghai, China to attend school under his father’s requests of a higher education. Even though the elements were all around him the seed was planted while attending summer school in Samoa. Jake was able to see firsthand the power of music through a cousin who DJ’d the family functions. To simply drop the needle on a record and have a crowd go crazy triggered the musical bug. This new hobby would soon prove insufficient and with a growing urge to translate music and manipulate what he was hearing – he needed something else. That something came in form of Fruity Loops: a digital audio workstation (DAW) for creating music. As generic the brand may have seemed at the time, Jake put the DAW to work and pushed it to its limits. All that mattered is that he was able to drop grimey bottom kicks in front of face-slappin’ snares at will. That was the BRIX formula for self expression. Returning home to California in 1999 when hip hops exposure was definitely at peak , he had no choice and all desire but to settle into Hip Hop – at this time, a classic sound defined by DJ Quik, 2pac, & of course Dr. Dre for the westcoast. Ten years later: Fruity Loops is now FL Studio, his stock sounds are replaced with over 700GB of samples, and a MIDI keyboard plays the middle man from fingertips to speakers – this is the foundation to the next fresh GLOBAL producer, BRIX. Brix has since produced for local independent artist Aliso Black (who inspired the alias Brix) and is currently working with Ben Frank on his solo release project. While grinding to put music behind Orange County’s prime talent Brix has recently produced for Reek Da Villian, Waka Flocka Flame, and Slaughterhouse’s Crooked I who teamed up with up and coming rap duo I&I. Staying relevant with Hip Hop yet creating a unique lane for “Commercial Banger” beats will make BRIX a major player in the evolution of Hip Hops prouction sound. So Keep an ear to the beats as BRIX will likely be the man behind your favorite rappers/singers catalog of music…
