The Bethune-Cookman University Concert Chorale is under the direction of Dr. Rebecca W. Steele. Dr. Steele is well known throughout the nation for her talent, musicianship and ability to develop career-oriented, professional young singers and choral groups. The verse at the right side, from a popular gospel selection is indicative of what Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune must have thought when she organized the first Bethune-Cookman University Concert Chorale in 1904. As its inception, under Dr. Bethune's direction, the Concert Chorale consisted of six members. Today, the Concert Chorale boasts a membership of over one hundred members and has grown into one of America's top singing aggregations. During its tenure as Bethune-Cookman's premiere performing group, the Chorale has traveled more than a half million miles throughout the United States and five foreign countries. "You may build cathedrals grand and tall, You may build skyscrapers large and small; You may conquer all the failure of your past, But, only what you do for Christ will last." The Chorale has performed with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and cast of Porgy and Bess for the Lyric Theatre; at Disney World for American Express and the McDonald Conference in Orlando, Florida. The Chorale has performed most recently for the 105th Congress, at the White House, at Howard University, and at the statue of Mary McLeod Bethune in Lincoln Park, Washington, D.C.
