I started playing guitar at age eight. My brother, Terry, and I did our first professional radio show at age twelve on radio station KNEA, Jonesboro AR. In later years, we moved to Wink TX where I met and became friends with a neighbor, Roy Orbison. In my garage, I taught him how to play guitar. In 1959, my brother and I wrote and recorded Ballen Keen and Sweet Lies, our first big hits. Sweet Lies reached the top 30 in Billboard, and Ballen Keen remains one of the best examples of the rockabilly style reaching cult status among rockabilly aficionados worldwide. I have written songs for Boxcar Willie, Doug Kershaw and the late David Houston, just to name a few. I toured with David Houston throughout the U.S. and Canada, and appeared on stage alongside many greats such as Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Ray Price, Alabama, Del Reeves and the late Jim Reeves. I toured with Waylon Jennings for two months in Alaska. I toured Branson MO with the late Boxcar Willie and appeared at his theater. I also performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. I have received many awards and have been inducted into the Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame, as well as the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
