I remeber back in my younger days when I first started playing guitar. Back in the 80's we grew up listeneing to Zep, Sabbath, Hendrix, Deep purple etc. and of course VH and all the VH inspired copies that followed. It was a time when the guitar douchebag playing acoustic Zep at a party would have the show stolen by some other guitar player that rattled off a few bars of Eruption or Diary of a madman (R. Rhoads) It was a time where you had to be technically proficient at your instrument. Fast forward to the early 2000s. I remember watching a Metallica video where the producer was suggesting that they dont put guitar solos on their album, and Kirk Hammett was adamantly fighting against it. I havent really followed Metallica after the black album, but I beleive Hammett lost the battle. It cant be that technically proficient guitar players become obsolete. If a modern guitar player only knows how to play power chords in some Rap Metal band, and never develops a style of his or her own, they arent unique and are replaceable, There fore they are not "rock stars" in my opinion. They are just someone who happened to learn how to play power chords which is all of us at some point in our guitar journey. Just my two cents- Rock on!
