"Hip Hop ain't dead, its been waiting for me", a strong belief of up and coming rapper, Madd Doc. Cocky? sure. Confident? why not. Yet Doc has a reason to be so sure. Born Britton Washburn in Los Angeles, the 23 year old Cali bred MC has had his share of good, bad, and ugly. No stranger to obstacles, Doc was born premature with his twin brother; a birth where both the twins boys and their mother almost didn't make it out alive. Weighing a sheer 3 lbs and born with an undeveloped stomach lining, these were the early stages where Doc first showed his strong will and determination. Throw in a dead beat father and hundreds of non-believers and you've got the definition of Doc's life in a nutshell.
Raised by a single mother in Walnut, CA, he soon caught the itch of hip hop at the young age of 7 years old, creating mixtapes with his twin brother and cousin. For the next 17 years he would start to mold his craft into one of the most promising yet underated careers in the California rap circuit. Not your typical bubble-gum carbon copy type of rapper, Doc likes to stick to the basics of hip-hop. Although he certifies Jay-Z and Common are his biggest influences, he's in love with the orignators: Big Daddy Kane, & Run DMC. An appreciation so rare these days its impossible not to see the passion which fuels his drive. "I'm not a rapper", he calmly contests, and there's no arguement here. He is an MC, a wordsmith or mic charmer if you will, but moreso an underdog. "People tend to always be skeptical when you're doing something that's so different than anyone else, that's why I battled so much in high school, I always had to prove to people that I am supposed to be here", he retorts with determined eyes. "You know when my dad found out how serious I was about my music he told me 'there's a million people out there doin that, and you're just a million and one', thats the last thing he ever told me".
Forever loyal, Doc has been in and out of the studio with his group "The District", (formely known as the "Ruff Nek Diztrikt"), a coalition with his twin brother C-Kwence Tha Kid, and his cousin Salute The Gawd on a mission to bring Cali hip hop back to the forefront. "As far I'm concerned, WE ARE California's best kept secret, hands down." A year after finishing his first independent album, "Doctor's Orders", Doc has had his hands full. Releasing two mixtape efforts, "On Call" & "The Pre-Fill", Doc is currently in the studio working on an EP project with Salute titled "SO SOULFUL!", as well as his second full length album, "Prescription Filled". His style is almost unorthadox, mixing the elements of ridiculous wordplay, smooth westcoast swagger, and gritty eastcoast flavor into strong addictive concept-based material; something that hip hop needs right now. "You know when someone is real sick you need medicine, you need something to make it better." He adds, "Well right now hip hop is not doin too good cuz it ran outta real MCs, that's why my album's called 'Prescription Filled', I'm here to make it better." Backed by his family, his crew, and his fanbase, Doc sure seems to be a rare commodity in the music world. A fierce grind, never say die attitude, and pure love for the game are the qualities which lead Doc to a very optomistic future. "I've been doin this for 17 years..there's a million people doin the same thing and i'm a million a one", he adds with a smile, "I like my odds."I started doin this shit since I was 7 man, that was when I was hearin alotta Dogg Pound, lots of Westside Connection, and that's when I hear Ain't No by Jay and Foxy, that record is so vital to my development as an artist today no joke.Have you performed in front of an audience?Jay-Z, Common, T.I., Kanye West, & my crew The DistrictPen and pad.Check out tha pages man':
