Welcome to the Southern Gentlemen web page.. The specific purpose of this particular page is to give you some background information on Larry Linteau .
First off, Larry was brought the forefront of jazz performance by way of the great Percy Payne and the legendary Marvin "Smitty" Smith Sr. on the northshore of Chicago. The band was the Jazz Brothers and they operated up and down the
northshore corridor. Through these gentlemen, Larry was exposed to many of the great players of our time, (i.e Monty Alexander, Smitty Jr. and a host of national and internationally known jazz stars.
Larry began his professional music career the way most modern players get into the business, he played and still plays cover tunes. At the time, Funkadelics, James Brown and the likes were some of the hottest groups out. Many times various bands he was in performed as opening acts for these groups. When he wasn't playing funky music, Larry was traveling with various rock groups (near stars) doing covers of Z.Z. Top, Bachman-Turner Overdirve and others. What was really unknown to a lot of people is that at the same time Larry was studying jazz techniques. He studied the John Mehegan course, and a host of other instructors. He listened to the greats
on his ax (Ramsey, Chich, Herbie, Oscar and a host of other legendary players.
Actually, his jazz studies started long before that, when, at seven years old he would listen to his older back porch Tenor sax playing neighbor, (Tyrone "T.T." Tyler). Meant affectionately T.T. ,,,,,Thank God fot back porches. Between T.T. and Larry's aunt Majorie McWilliams, he took an interest in music and jazz in particular..
At twelve, Larry began his formal training as a jazz musician under the tutalidge of the great John Puckett (catch him at the Peabody in Little Rock on a regular basis). It was under Mr.Puckett that Larry was baptized into jazz learning tunes like Take Five, Autumn Leaves, and a host of other jazz standards.
This CD short, "Traditions and Legends", is a tribute to all those great masters that he
studied and learned from. To mention just a few, Mr. Coltrane, Mr. Hubbard, Mr. Shorter and many others......... We all thank you for this beautiful tradition we call jazz.
But Larry says it's fun to do the traditional tunes, but he has coming in the near future
a new approach to these tunes. Stand-by.Have you performed in front of an audience?Very seldom playing live shows, though we still enjoy it from time to time. Most of us played through the soul and Rock era and subsequently through the natural process of things, improving musicianship led to jazz.
