Free Jazz

Welcome to Lapis Lazuli, an improvised free-for-all for all to enjoy. Improvisation is a beautiful refined art, but one whose appreciation has decreased dramatically over the past 150 years or so. Luckily for you, the listener, jazz in particular has rekindled a fascination in spontaneity in music, which is something that we ardently strive to cultivate. When you mix this modern improvisational tradition rooted in jazz with Romantic and modern Classical forms, harmonies, and ideas, salt liberally and let sit at room temperature for 25 minutes, Lapis Lazuli is the result. The key to our music is that the structural and organizational patterns, thematic events, etc. (in layman's terms, anything repetitious) that occur in our music are almost always spontaneous. They arise entirely from the two of us being on the same page at the same time, and even moderately composed songs and pieces that we play again and again always develop in an entirely new way every time as a result, depending on what page we both happen to land on that day. So basically...if you want the Lapis Lazuli experience, you need to come to our live shows yourself! Hope to see you there. Stefan Paolini & Barry Seroff
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Given the improvised nature of our music, live shows are where it's at! We play in and around New York. Check us out, stay posted for updates as more bookings arise.
Your musical influences
As you will hear in our music for yourself, both of us have an extremely vast and eclectic background of stylistic influences. We are both Classically trained musicians who love to rock out with our amps turned up to 11 one night and then play swing, bebop or fusion the next. If you were to take a random sample from each of our iTunes playlists, there's a fairly equal possibility that you'd run into King Crimson, the Wu Tang Clan, Brahms, Sublime, Sepultura, Miles, the Supremes, or traditional Japanese or Indian music. While the instrumentation we've chosen doesn't lend itself equally to all of these genres, we like to think that everything we listen to and experience in general in some way informs every single piece we play. Maybe you can even hear influences we haven't...!
What equipment do you use?
Piano, flute, shakuhachi, and a slew of other silly music- or at least sound-making media that make their way into (yes, as in inside of) aforementioned piano, flute, and shakuhachi
