Are you tired of cover songs? Pop idol? Stars In Their Eyes? or Star For A Night? Then how about A Star For Life? Are you wondering where the real talent is - or if theres any at all these days? Do you find it sad when true talent like rocket to stardom after they die? Well here isDead Girl On Earth.
The Voice - The Talent - The Style
Band/artist history
1994 was when I was placed into the music scene. I met a very strange man who among many things, was a milkman! He was also very good friends with Massive Attack and Portishead (probably delivered good milk, and I'm sure it was milk anyway!) He managed to get a white label interested in his songs and wanted a female singer to record them and since he was also my Sister's milkman - well do I need to elaborate? The single 'Sweet Paradise' was released into the independant chart and gathered a fair bit of interest. It wasn't really my cup of tea so he let me take the next song, 'East to West' and make it my own. Was a great song and got some TV coverage but things didn't really go much further.
Things have really just gone from there. Plenty of gigs, plenty of recording and writing and lot's of working on different projects. I've been in bands and duos and had a few albums out with other writing teams and now I'm pleased to have been able to get my own full album recorded and finally give everyone a clear view of who and what I am.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Are you asking if I mime? (never!!) No, I've been playing live for around 15 years when and where I can. I am currently showcasing my first original album, "Dead Girl On Earth" in and around Bristol (more info on website www.kyra-bernice.com)and pushing for as much exposure as possible. I also play acoustically for a couple of great open mic evenings in Bristol.
I adore performing live. Basically, this is where people can really see what you're all about. The album has a great sound vocally, however, due to not being able to spend thousands on the recording, the power in my voice is, I'm told, at it's best live.
A special moment for me is every time I look out into the crowd and every single person is looking right at me, the song comes to an end and there's that split second gap where it looks like they're still frozen - that's MY moment...and then they clap.
Your musical influences
I love John Lennon and Kurt Cobain. I admire Marilyn Manson for what he has achieved and how he's achieved it. I love Mozart for his madness. I admire Madonna for her staying power. I've always loved Ozzy Osbourbe (pre telly-trash sitcoms) Bon Jovi for being a great live band. Rather than be my influences, I think these artists have helped train my voice to handle a variety of differnt styles with ease. I like a lot of female melodic singers also, but none I could personally say were influential. I like Matchbox 20 and Led Zeplin. The list is endless really. As long as the music took talent to make, I like it.
What equipment do you use?
My Voice, Guitar and attitude ;o)winky winky!
Anything else?
I think I've told you everything but my bra size - you'll have to come to a show to guess that though and before you ask...yes they are ;o)
What can I say? I plod on always enjoying what I do. I'm sure I'm not the only one that get's asked this but, people often ask me what will I do if I don't get a record deal or 'make it,' and for some reason it seems as though they want me to say, 'oh well, that'll be it then won't it?' They don't seem to understand that with music, there is no end. I will always write and always sing. I will always give singing/piano lessons...and that's just scratching the surface. Anyway, I hopefully don't have to worry about that because we're all gonna make it right? We do what we can - good luck to us all!!
