It's difficult to think of Bob Khaleel as anyone other than "Bronx Style Bob," the young street poet who helped revolutionize the East Coast hip-hop scene of the mid-'80s. By the end of the decade, he had moved to Los Angeles and begun a collaboration with Ice-T & the Rhyme Syndicate, appearing on both the Rhyme Syndicate compilation, "Coming Through," and on Ice-T's "The Iceberg." Years later, when he released his critically acclaimed debut album, "Grandma's Ghost," he was named "Rolling Stone"'s Best New Artist. "Talk about versatile," they wrote. "Bob can croon modern R&B seduction and bark gleeful speedpunk, as well as throw down ace hip-hop rhymes. He is a true original." He followed that up by forming Super 8, an alternative funk band that shared the stage with such disparate acts as Blues Traveler, the Deftones, AC/DC, Dave Matthews, and Goldfinger. With his new album, "People Watching," Bob Khaleel sounds like a man reborn. He's created a slab of succulent ear candy, an album dripping with slices of soul-flavored pop, flowing melodicism, and supple grooves and beats. Songs like "No Mercy" and "It's a Shame" are deepened by an endless array of hooks and, of course, Khaleel's rich, warm voice and soulful delivery. Simply put, "People Watching" is an album that makes pop exciting once again. "Y'know, it sounds funny to say, but I could've picked another career," says Khaleel. "I could've gone with something that would've made me more money, or one that would've enabled me to live more comfortably, but I genuinely care about the art of playing and creating music. There's nothing like it. These songs are my life."
