No More ft. Danny Reid No More ft. Danny Reid
Interview excerpt with Dirkmouse "Da Bouse"
Dirkmouse "Da Bouse": How long have you been in the entertainment industry?
Karma Nai: I have been singing for just about 2 1/2 years. During that time Mr. Strategy my then and current producer prompted me to try my skills at 'rappin'. I remember distinctly a few guys were in the studio at that time which I had the utmost respect for and i'm glad to say they were silenced. (laughs) Eventually I developed and honed the art.
Dirkmouse "Da Bouse": So you sang for 2 1/2 yrs. Was this the typical church choir singing that most ppl find their humble beginnings?
Karma Nai: (laughs) No... it wasn't. I had 'soca' beginnings. (smiles) Semi-strange but thats how it was for me.
Dirkmouse "Da Bouse": Ok... semi-strange but cool at the same time. (laughs) So... the transition form 'soca' to 'rappin', how was that for you?
Karma Nai: Well I should add that there was one more transition between those two mentioned. To be more accurate I transitioned from 'soca' to 'rnb' and that was pretty easy. The transition from 'rnb' to 'rappin' was much more difficult.
Dirkmouse "Da Bouse": In what aspects was that transition difficult?
Karma Nai: I'd grown fond of writing like an 'rnb' artist and it wasn't easy switching into the world of hiphop. So... to aid in my transition I studied rappers and their flows and eventually it sank in. I think i've found a niche although i'm not through with exploration. (smiles)
Dirkmouse "Da Bouse": Your artist name Karma... How did that come about, is that your real name?
Karma Nai: No, it's not. I believe you are how you see yourself and I see myself as a force. Karma ensures that whatever I do, I do it to the best of my ability. Everyone prefers the best when faced with options... I make sure that whatever I present of myself, for myself or for others, is that preference: 'the best'.
Dirkmouse "Da Bouse": Nice... I like that form of thought. (smiles) What can we expect from Karma the artiste for the remainder of 2009?
Karma Nai: Many things... more raps, some dabbling into my once preferred genre 'rnb', some fusions and of course some wicked local features.
Dirkmouse "Da Bouse": Speaking of features I heard one of your tracks recently 'No More' which features Danny Reid. In my opinion that is a deep, touching song. What inspired you to pen that production?
Karma Nai: Everyone has to let go of something at some time. Some people do it with anger, some people forgive and forget. To suffice, I penned that song to let go of the pain and anger I had experienced in a previous relationship. Actually when I wrote that song I had moved on and was reveling in the fact that the other party hadn't. It was a stress reliever... it'll always be one of the most honest tracks i've ever done.
Dirkmouse "Da Bouse": (Awwwh) Thats some really deep stuff. Now if you had to give advice to an aspiring artiste wanting to make it in the music industry what would it be?
Karma Nai: Patience is necessary, understanding is key, and you MUST be open to objective criticism especially from those closest to you. It takes time to make healthy music so be prepared for the long ride.
